Last Update: March 21, 2019
See the screenshot above? It is from a video I made in 2015 of MattyB on the right, singing and rapping to a cover of the song Shake It Off. The video and sound quality was terrible. It was not much different to other videos I made of MattyB when he visited LA on his concert tours. He was 13 at that time of this video.
This Blog is about how Matthew Morris aka MattyBRaps helped me pay for my upgrade from monthly to yearly and the role WA played in this process. Thank you MattyB who in a weird way helped me earn some money. In case anyone is curious, Matt lives in Atlanta, GA.
Shake It Off has since got over 2 million views on my YouTube Channel! I created it in 2006 having no idea what I would use it for. Making a profit wasn't on my radar. It was more of a fun thing. It wasn't until 2012 that I started to upload videos. These were about our cats and church social events.
While checking out YouTube videos I first came across MattyB when he was 7, rapping covers of popular songs. He seemed cute but this wasn't really my form of entertainment.
Others thought differently as his first video went viral overnight when he was 6. Matty had an older cousin who was a rapper and it was he who inspired the young boy. By the time Matt was 9, this upstart kid sensation had millions of followers and over a billion views on his social media platforms. When Matty came to LA to give his first concert I took two of my music students and their mom to check him out. I made videos of his show that were really bad and posted them on my YouTube for fun.
I doubted that I would get many views. The song copyrights were owned by others. Hence, the views I thought, would not qualify for any ad revenue.
My YouTube Growth
YouTube kept track of the views and other stats in their Analytics. I noticed that my views started to grow. I created an AdSense account just in case there were videos that qualified me for revenue. My YouTube channel has grown to over 13.6k subscribers and over 7.8 million views. This was achieved this with no promotion by me. It was the young artists fans who created all this interest for free! None of their idols posted complete videos of their actual shows like I did. They loved it and kept returning for more, telling their friends too.
I am not alone in promoting young artists. There are others who do this too, but as fan page videos. I didn't dedicate my channel to any one artist.
I never completed the AdSense process. In time, I totally forgot I had done this. Whenever I checked my YouTube analytics I saw revenue that was less than $5. Google doesn't pay until your account reaches a minimum of $100. However, I persevered and attended four more MattyB shows he made in LA over the following three years.
Change of Mission
There were many young artists, like Carson Lueders from Oregon, the Summerall Brothers from Texas and Mackenzie Sol who visited LA and even made LA their second home, courtesy of their parents. I decided to follow their entertainment trajectory, made friends with their parents and attended their shows, My mission had diversified to provide support and encouragement for these young artists. The way I used was to make videos of their shows and post them on my YouTube channel. Their parents appreciated what I was doing as any publicity for their budding stars was worth it to them.
Wealthy Affiliate (WA) To The Rescue!
Fast forward to December 2018. I crossed paths with my sponsor Tim McKinlay while pursuing Stock Gumshoe' He chatted with me and discovered I was always on the lookout to make additional income. Since I had invested in deals that didn't pan out I checked out promises on this site before diving in.
Tim told me that there was a company that helped members build an online business that I may find interesting. The best part was I could join for free to check it out. I would have one full week of total access to everything to kick the tires so to speak. Tim didn't tell me that there was a subscription service, but he mentioned that no credit card was necessary. That is what hooked me.
Mean Membership Fee Tricks
Most other opportunities offered low cost entry memberships paid for with a credit card. A cancellation date was given. And if I didn't cancel my card would be charged for a full membership. Guess what, I often forgot about that date and I was charged. The companies with lower cost charges were amenable to give me a full refund when I canceled. But the companies that had higher charges, never did. They referred me to the Terms of Service that said clearly if I didn't cancel the subscription would renew with no refunds allowed.
WA was refreshingly different. After signing up I found out I could stay as long as I wanted as a free member. However, after one week, my access would be limited to the bare essentials. In order to extend my full experience I was given the option of an almost half price monthly fee before the first week was up. I took advantage of this. I would have liked to pay for the annual membership, but money was tight and I didn't.
One of the courses I took was about AdSense. It was one of the many options available to make money from one's website. WA explained that it would not be the major source of income in the affiliate marketing program but it was one more piece of the puzzle that we needed to know about.
While setting up my AdSense account, Google told me I already had one! I was astounded because I had totally forgotten I made one all those years ago.
$2005. That was the amount I saw sitting in my account. There must have been a mistake. For two reasons. If that was correct, how come Google didn't pay me? And when I checked my YouTube analytics a few years back I only saw an amount less than $10? Clearly, I must have no idea how the copyright system is applied by YouTube. I need to do more research.
The Mystery Solved
The AdSense lesson walked me through the process that involved verifying my account as well as linking it with my bank account. I had to complete the tax section that required providing my Social Security number. The work I was doing was mainly for my WA website. It became clear that I had not taken these steps for my YouTube account. I promptly completed this process and hoped the money would be transferred.
A few days ago I checked my bank account and saw I was $2K richer. Yay! Google had transferred the money to my account. They stated they normally pay between the 21st and 26th of each month so I was not expecting it earlier.
I was glad that I was ignorant I had this money. When I reviewed how this accumulated over the years, I found that the most I earned in any month was about $160. Most months the earnings were less than $5. Since YouTube only shows the current months earnings that is why I didn't see what I had earned in total. But AdSense showed me the total balance. My ignorance helped me with my WA membership. If I had known about the money and withdrew it in small increments earlier, I would have spent that and not been in the situation I was in now.
WA Yearly Upgrade
Today I took a giant step for me by paying for a yearly subscription. It works out to about $29 a month compared to $49. What a huge savings that is. My sponsor Tim had encouraged me to take this step as soon as I could afford it. He definitely made sense.
My Future With WA
Although my focus right now is to complete the Online Entrepreneur Certification (OEC) I will now accelerate my actions to complete this sooner rather than later. I want to start and complete Bootcamp so that I can promote WA to earn the right to become a Super Affiliate and attend the Las Vegas Summit.
I know that will require hard and concentrated effort. The amazing thing is when done correctly, I know I will be earning my way towards this worthy goal through commissions when I introduce others to this amazing place.
If anyone doubts that they can build a successful business here, think again. Without even trying, I still managed to earn over $2000 on my YouTube site. It was not affiliate marketing, but it was earned through my online presence. The training at WA helped me to discover my earnings and what steps to take to access that money. Just think how much more can be achieved when the skills we learn here are implemented daily and wisely.
Thank you, Kyle and Carson and your team for having the foresight to create this amazing place of online business learning.
Lastly, many thanks to Tim McKInlay for finding me ONLINE and inviting me to join this life changing community.
